All rentals made through ShareGrid must be covered, regardless of the item's value or purpose. ShareGrid does not allow rentals to proceed without valid coverage in place.

ShareGrid allows renters to use third-party rental insurance, but the policy must meet specific requirements to provide proper protection for both renters and equipment owners.

Follow these guidelines to ensure compliance and make your rental experience hassle-free.

Insurance Requirements

To be accepted on ShareGrid, your third-party insurance must:

  • Include “Rented Equipment from Others” coverage: It must cover off-premises rented gear.

  • Ensure the policy is of the correct type: Homeowners, renters, and general liability policies are not accepted.

  • Rentals involving high-value items require higher coverage limits: Make sure your policy equals or exceeds the total replacement value of the rented items.

  • Policies must not set an aggregate or per-item limit.

Tip: If you’re unsure whether your policy meets these requirements, contact your insurance provider.

Unsupported Insurance Example

  • Next Insurance:

Policies from Next Insurance do not cover rented equipment. Customers needing coverage for equipment that is rented, leased, borrowed, or owned should look into other options, as these are not included in Next Insurance's policies.

  • Full Frame Insurance:

Full Frame Insurance has aggregate or per-item limits and does not meet the criteria we require for our services.

Hiscox Policy Holders

If you have a Hiscox policy, when submitting a COI to an owner, ensure your agent specifically states their coverage limit for rented equipment in the remarks section of the COI.

Managing Rentals for High-Value Items

Rentals involving high-value items often require elevated coverage limits. If your instant coverage limit is insufficient for the transaction, ShareGrid provides alternative solutions:

  • Purchase Short-Term or Annual Rental Policies: These coverage plans are specifically designed for temporary needs or extended rental periods, ensuring the total replacement value of all rented items is protected.

  • Leverage a Third-Party Insurance Policy: Customers are allowed to use third-party rental insurance, provided the policy meets ShareGrid's minimum coverage requirements.

Please note that one insurance policy can cover several items under the same rental agreement, as long as the policy's coverage limit can cover the total replacement value. Make sure your policy is updated to reflect the total value of all rented items.

How to Verify Your Third-Party Insurance

  1. Log in to ShareGrid and add your insurance policy details under Settings > Insurance > Third-Party Insurance.

  2. Provide the email address of your insurance agent or provider during upload.

  3. ShareGrid will contact them to verify.

  4. Once the insurance is verified, resubmit your rental request if needed to finalize the transaction.

Verification Time: Usually within 1–2 business days, sometimes faster.
You’ll receive a confirmation email once approved.

Key Reminders

  • Make sure your policy meets all requirements before renting.

  • Plan ahead: Allow time for verification before booking.

  • Avoid policies with per-item limits.

  • Ensure it includes coverage for rented equipment from others.

  • Verify the policy in advance via your ShareGrid account.

  • For multiple rentals, ensure your policy covers the combined replacement value of all items.
